January 3, 2016
Binding Up the Brokenhearted
Isaiah 61 [NLT]

Jesus announces his public ministry by quoting from the Prophet Isaiah. Isaiah describes the coming of the Messiah, Jesus proclaims that he is the fulfillment, and the revolution of Love begins.

January 10, 2016
Be Careful How You Live
Ephesians 5:15-20, Matthew 28:18-20

When we do not follow our vocation as individuals, the church could miss its mandate.  In fact, when the church does not follow its mandate, it is acting foolishly. The times are so urgent that we, the church, cannot afford to miss our opportunity to live lives fully committed to Christ and His mission: the redemption and reconciliation of humankind to God.

Choose
Joshua 24:1-2a; 14-18

Have we tamed the message of the prophets and of Jesus? Choosing Jesus should be a life-changing, time altering experience.

January 31, 2016
Dance With Jesus
John 14:6; Philippians 4:4-9

Find  a new lease on life in the one who offers us forgiveness in exchange for repentance, comfort in trade for sorrow, and the promise of eternal life in trade for this short temporal life.

Connect to Jesus
Matthew 28:18-20; Revelation 3:20

Connecting with Jesus, sounds like a slogan. It’s not. Our connection with Jesus the Christ is the single most important task that we humans can accomplish in this life.

Stuck on You

Faith Enemies
Hebrews 11:1-3; 33-35  [NLT]

As much as we acknowledge that God is with us to the end, we have to admit that sometimes being a Christian in our world is not easy. Scripture uses phrases like ‘running a race’ and ‘endurance’ to describe the experience.  Learn what the greatest stumbling blocks are to faith and how to overcome them.

Overcoming Giants
1 Samuel 17:1-11; 17-23; 32-37; 40-50

We all face ‘giants’ at one time or another.  Unlike David’s experience, our giants don’t usually taunt us, but they can certainly feel unbeatable and insurmountable. According to the story of David, no matter how small you believe you are; you can defeat the Giants of your life.

March 13, 2016, 5th Sunday in Lent
We’ve Never Done that Before!
Jonah 1: 1-3; Genesis 12:1; Exodus 3: 1-4; 7-8; 1 Samuel 17: 32-37; Luke 4:16-21; 28-30; Acts 2:41-47

One of the most exciting aspects of the Christian life is that it is a constant challenge.  God is constant, but how God chooses to carry out that plan changes all the time.  We are invited to change and to grow with the kingdom of God as we are invited to share the Good News.

March 20, 2016, Palm Sunday
Was He out of His Mind?
Philippians 2:5-11

What was he thinking? Why would anyone in his right mind go willingly to his death? He was the son of God, why didn’t he just do something else? This is the mystery of Christ’s sacrifice for us.  He was out of his mind in love with us.

Easter 2016, March 27
Birth Quakes
John 20:1-18

It’s Easter Sunday; the cross is empty; and the tomb is empty.  It is time to start over, to change directions, and clean up our acts!  Because Jesus lived, died, and rose from the dead, all of us can leave behind the things, behaviors, and choices we have made, embrace the mystery of God’s salvation through Jesus Christ, and find life.

Sermon Series and Bible Study:
No Wonder They Crucified Him

April 3 (Sermon)
April 6 (Bible Study)

Make a Commitment
Matthew 12:22-32

We live in a fence-sitting world. People have grown comfortable with partial commitments, hedged bets, and associate memberships. God does not want us to  follow most of the time; Jesus demands that we choose to follow all of the time.  Commitment is demanding; it is frightening, it is time consuming; and it changes us. No wonder they crucified Him!

April 10 (Sermon)
April 13 (Bible Study)

The Circle of Grace
Luke 6:37-42

The Bible tells us that God is a being whose goodness burns so brilliantly hot and clean that, unfiltered by grace, it would instantly incinerate anything stained by the slightest sin, no matter how beautiful the outside looks.  God’s grace is the only thing that allows us to be in God’s presence. The proud believe in their own strength and abilities; they find the need for grace difficult to believe. No wonder they  crucified Him!

April 17 (Sermon)
April 20 (Bible Study)

Forbidden Pleasures
Matthew 5:27-30

Jesus lived in a spirit of joy, humor, and warmth to such a degree, that people in his presence actually enjoyed themselves. His words were entertaining and informative.  Yet there are times when Jesus does not sound like much fun.  Sometimes he says things that can smash up against our sense of freedom and personal fulfillment.  No wonder they crucified Him!

April 24 (Sermon)
April 27 (Bible Study)

When Jesus Asks Too Much
Matthew 19:16-30

What is the driving force of your life? Jesus says if it is not God you are living life in the wrong box. The Christian life is one of paradox: in giving we receive; in our weakness we are made strong; in dying we are born to a richer life.  To follow Jesus, we have to adopt God’s values.  No wonder they crucified Him!

May 1 (Sermon)
May 4 (Bible Study)

When Jesus Really Scares Us
Matthew 16:21-25

If we really hear what Jesus has to say; if we are really going to follow him; if we are really going to have a new life, then we have to sacrifice and serve. This is painful and very frightening.  Jesus’ way of life actually asks us to give costly allegiance. No wonder they crucified Him.

May 8 (Sermon)
May 11 (Bible Study)

When Jesus Changes Everything
John 21

God’s Word calls us to listen and be refined. Jesus dared to ask questions that cut to the very soul, exposing the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.    God keeps asking God’s questions, not to hurt us, but to heal us. No wonder he didn’t stay dead; Christ’s mission in the world will continue to the end of time. No wonder they crucified Him.
