Dr. Katerina (Katja) Souvorova,
Director of Music Ministries

The Concord St-Andrews Staff Parish Relations Committee, [SPRC] is pleased to announce that Dr. Katerina Souvorova will be our new Director of Music Ministries beginning November 1, 2014.

Dr. Souvorova comes to us with a rich background in music.
  • Trained in the musical arts in Russia from the age of 5.
  • She earned her D.M.A., M.M, and Artist Diploma degrees with highest honors in piano performance from the Conservatory of Belarus.
  • Following her education, Katerina was an accomplished pianist and vocal coach in Minsk
  • where she taught piano at the Conservatory of Belarus and was a vocal coach at the State Academy of the Bolshoi Opera.
  • She has extensive experience working with internationally known conductors, producers, and singers.

Katerina moved to the US in 1996 when her husband, Alexandre was offered a job at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. While in Charlotte,
  • She persuaded other music lovers to found the Central Piedmont Community College Opera Theater, where she served as its musical director.
  • As a piano soloist and collaborative artist, she also made numerous recordings that spanned a wide range of composer and national styles.
In 2000, Katerina and her husband moved to Germantown when her husband accepted a post working on the Human Genome Project at NIH in Bethesda. In our area, she has worked as
  • A vocal coach at both George Mason and Catholic Universities,
  • Principle accompanist with the Baltimore Opera.
  • In 2003, she founded the Bel Cantanti Opera and still serves as its general and artistic director.
  • Most recently she has directed a community production of the Sound of Music.

Tom O'Grady, a tenor in the New Dominion Chorale who serves as board president of Bel Cantanti Opera, describes Katerina as a "remarkable combination of right brain and left brain strengths. She has superb organizational skills, unbelievable energy and discipline. She's not just a musician. On the set, she does painting and carpentry and stitches curtains. And then she mothers all these young singers!"

Dr. Souvorova’s work was highly acclaimed by Joe McLellan, the late classical music critic emeritus of /The Washington Post/ who said, “…Katerina Souvorova, [is] a pianist of international stature and vocal coach of extraordinary talent…We can credit her with a
high level of skill, both in music and in human relations, and an even higher level of determination.”

Katerina is looking forward to being a part of our community as she helps to grow our music ministries.
